WordPress is like Windows. It’s massively popular and used by millions. This also makes it the biggest target for script kiddie hackers. You could argue that their is a twisted symbiotic relationship since the software improves with every patched hole that is creatively revealed. But some bloggers do really get screwed with and its not fun.

WordPress has some decent backup plugins and I am running one that emails my gmail account every night with the attached backup file.

    WP BACKUP EMAIL

Though this does give some peace of mind, the real problem with web security is that it revolves around your email address. Passwords, confidential files, contacts etc etc are all right there in your email account with only a single password as an obstacle. Once your email is compromised, the digital intruder can get access to any number of other accounts…. whether that be your social network services or banking services…. you can get hit hard.
This is a topic I would like to write about again so i’ll just end with the most obvious tip.

Change your email passwords often and make them “very strong” and automate data backup.

  • I really need to get the WordPress bookmarklet working with custom fields so I can force titles to link to the remote url instead of my permalink. Too busy to look into this issue but if anyone out there has custom fields working inside Press This, let me know. Thanks.

WordPress MU vs. – WP-MU: WordPress MultiUser News.

  • excuse some blog titles not linking properly. earlier, i was trying to get a sort of daring fireball effect for all the links i bookmark here. so i want the titles to link directly to the remote url, not my blog permalink. i can do this manually with a custom field but had problems getting the Press This bookmarklet to properly add the custom field :/ so as a result, i need to re-edit a template to fix links category blog titles until i can fix the problem.

  • i’m finding this p2 theme to be too buggy. aye. i go from a frustrating experience in google reader to a frustrating experinece in wordpress. you know the “press this” bookmarklet sucks, at least on mac firefox 3.5. this is why i write my own software. i dont like dealing with software that other people wrote. so now what i have to go report bugs somewhere on wordpress and/or fix it myself and hope that i dont override my fix with the next update?
wordpress might be a great app to a whole lot of people. and i give it a go every now and then. but each time i am reminded why i dont like using it.
you know what i enjoyed more? i recently installed Vanilla Forum over on my other site http://ogg.ly/gab. Had some bugs here and there but overall, it really is simple and easy….. the software gets out of my way. Vanilla2 is in dev too. http://vanilla2.com which i had installed and tested a little. i might have to revisit that. sheesh!

  • just added a style to posts in the random category. they have a blue background. i suppose that i wanted to try and signify that these are just sudden random thoughts that dont fall in either the microblogging or macroblogging category. just playing around really.

  • so using this P2 WordPress theme, it’s interesting since it is meant to be a sort of intranet microblogging system I guess. When logged in, I have a quick post form that submits using ajax and apparently the page auto-updates so you get a real-time vibe. Not sure what the reload increment or if it’s doing a push or a pull or a hack hybrid of the two… have not looked at the guts of this theme too much. Anyway, whats interesting about using this theme is how is nudges you to post short messages while still allowing for long-form blogging. The result is this juxtaposed mix of micro and macro blogging. I also use categories to filter between short and long posts. I fel like I need to visually tune short posts maybe with a special border or background color. But all in all, I like mixing forms and think it will work for me and this blog.

  • I need a wordpress plugin that works differently than what I can get from Twitter Tools plugin(s). I tihnk all I want is to optionally and manually choose to post a blog post I am writing/editing to twitter and customize the tweet text and use my own short url. Until I find or build this, I am disabling this blogs twitter integration. Any suggestions?

ok, i have to admit that i have enjoyed using wordpress these past few days. especially with this P2 theme installed. i also like my decision to add two categories to separate short and long posts. twitter integration is working well but needs some tweaking.

wonder what it would be like if i opened up this domain, vocal.ly, for others to use as a way to share links with commentary. in other words, if you want to share a link, you would use a vocally bookmarklet or just login to this wordpress mu site and write a short post with the link you want to share. the post would get published to your twitter, @vocally and obviously posted on this site. the link that gets posted to twitter etc would be a vocal.ly short url instead and people would read your comments and see the full url that they can follow and/or leave a comment on the vocal.ly post.

not a replacement for rapid url sharing but does nudge people to have a threaded discussion off of twitter while being safer since you know the link will hit the vocal.ly multi-user wordpress blog where you can see the long url and participate in discussions.

http://a.tinythread.com is a little side project of Delicious founder Joshua Schachter and has had some decent momentum as a simple place to have discussions initiated by a tweet. well i suppose this is the same idea :) except it would use WordPress and have a built-in short url. Could also include a secondary short url for the url that is referenced in the post. Like vocal.ly/go/qwe for remote url and vocal.ly/rty for the local post.

this sounds like it would be best if it were a wordpress plugin for WPMU.

something to think about at least.

smart move by wordpress to establish and integrate the short url WP.ME. they also took all the right steps to deploying it for its users.

    * WP.me is the only two-letter .me domain in the world.
    * Every blog and post on WordPress.com has a WP.me URL now.
    * These are all exposed in the using rel=shortlink.
    * It doesn’t work for any URL in the world, just WP.com-hosted ones.
    * The links are permanent, they will work as long as WordPress.com is around.
    * WP.me is spam-free, because we are constantly monitoring and removing spam from WP.com.
