Updates from September, 2009

  • if this site continues to be a mix of micro and macro blog chunks and whatever falls in between, like this “random thought”, and with my RSS feed(s) being equipped with rssCloud and PubSubHubBub for faster near real-time delivery to subscribers (if i were to have subscribers ;) …. then i see my intimate twitter usage dropping rapidly and replaced with pointers back to here. Same philosophy i ‘ve had with video…. using youtube to post teasers to videos on your own site. It’s important to me right now. I’ve been lazy and gone with the flow of social appetizers. Got to get MY shit together again. Thats what this is. Excuse the disorderly river of thought but this is also a process of learning how to use WordPress again in an intelligent way that works for me.

  • ok, since i’ve talked about yourls so often, i’m going to install it now real quick. i already have a short url solution in place for content posted here on vocal.ly but i don’t have one in place for external urls. it’s not a priority but i’ll toss it in the mix just for fun. who knows, maybe a few peeps will use vocal.ly to make a short url. doubtful. but i will ;)

  • You’ll notice that I have started to re-post my own comments that I leave on other blogs here with a link to the blog post. Yes, I am a fairly active commenter. I am conflicted with this. I have thoughts about the difference between those who write an article/story and those who comment. I’ll save that for a longer post here later. But part of the reason why I started this blog recently is so I comment less and blog more. but I still enjoy engaging in conversations and value the commentsphere. After all, I am still R&Ding solutions to comments and replies across the web…. Like what’s next after trackbacks/pingbacks and blogless messaging based solely on RSS/Atom.
Evertime I copy&paste a comment here, I am reminded of this topic. My comment should be part of my river too :)

  • just added a style to posts in the random category. they have a blue background. i suppose that i wanted to try and signify that these are just sudden random thoughts that dont fall in either the microblogging or macroblogging category. just playing around really.

  • so using this P2 WordPress theme, it’s interesting since it is meant to be a sort of intranet microblogging system I guess. When logged in, I have a quick post form that submits using ajax and apparently the page auto-updates so you get a real-time vibe. Not sure what the reload increment or if it’s doing a push or a pull or a hack hybrid of the two… have not looked at the guts of this theme too much. Anyway, whats interesting about using this theme is how is nudges you to post short messages while still allowing for long-form blogging. The result is this juxtaposed mix of micro and macro blogging. I also use categories to filter between short and long posts. I fel like I need to visually tune short posts maybe with a special border or background color. But all in all, I like mixing forms and think it will work for me and this blog.

  • I need a wordpress plugin that works differently than what I can get from Twitter Tools plugin(s). I tihnk all I want is to optionally and manually choose to post a blog post I am writing/editing to twitter and customize the tweet text and use my own short url. Until I find or build this, I am disabling this blogs twitter integration. Any suggestions?

  • recently decided to set aside a night or two to prototype tweetmore.info. the name sais it all. it will be a mashup web service. since twitter metadta api is limited for tweets, i will allow for additional metadata to be added with a “synch to twitter” option that will sit in idle until twitter properly provides such a metadata api with key-value storage. this is low priority but something will eventually be put up at this site within 30 days.
