About Twitter’s Flat Mainstream Adoption Issue
I just read this article on Business Insider and posted a comment there. I’ve been vocal about various Twitter topics and this has been one of them. Figured I would log my comment in a new post here.

Big missing reason….. Twitter profile pages and media sharing is non-existent. These are necessary for social networks to truly go mainstream. Using 3rd party apps help but are not sufficient. The features need to reside in the twitter.com website natively. Twitter has been both stubborn (wants to be different, simple) and just overwhelmed with stabilizing their platform which has almost always been shaky.
The status update is a staple. The rest of the features are targeted to early-adopter tech heads and developers.
The API, Lists, Tweet Metadata…. and then some experimental features for marketers to test potential revenue models. That said, ~150million users is a large base. And MSM has definately adopted Twitter as it is plastered all over TV along-side Facebook. Twitter is “Known” by the masses but is not yet actively used by the masses. And that is because users want more social features than just a 140 charcter messaging system, especially when they already use native SMS with friends/fam.
So, A much improved Profile Page and ability to upload photos and become more comparable to Facebook whether they like that or not. Facebook has reflected Twitter features and now its Twitter’s turn. I’ve been pointing this out for a while too. It seems inevitable IF Twitter cares about this strategy of “going mainstream”. It is plausible that they are just being patient knowing that the future potential is waiting for them while they come to smart realizations about what the Twitter Phenomena is exactly and how best to make their investors/shareholders happy while carving out a path towards prosperity and long-term relevance.
